Summer at The Tavern on the Square in New Wilmington!

The Tavern on the Square is so much more than a restaurant...it's a destination!  Located in a Home built in 1849, the Tavern is rich in history. Once part of the Underground Railroad, the Tavern has a tunnel that is located in the basement of the building, where slaves escaped on their way to freedom and in the main dining room there is a hidden staircase, where a secret step lifts up. I wonder what was passed through that step. Was it food for the hidden slaves? Was it a Bible? Things needed to help the slaves on their journey? Check out the journals located on each table. There are murals painted on the walls that depict local scenery and landmarks, painted by local artist Gib Mcgill. The murals are in the style of RUFUS PORTER who was an artist in the 1850's.  There are also hand stenciled walls and floors throughout The Tavern done in the style of another artist during that time period, Moses Eaton.  There are seven rooms throughout The Tavern, each one unique, interesting and beautifully decorated. We boast four private dining rooms to hold any kind of event or function. Car clubs, Red Hat Ladies, Tea Parties, Birthday and anniversary parties and dinners, retirement dinners, funeral luncheons, rehearsal dinners...we can accommodate many different events!
