Welcome to The Tavern on the Square! We are a family owned restaurant located in the heart of Amish Country in Western Pennsylvania. The Tavern on the Square is located in a home that was built in 1849 by Seth Poppino. Seth was a doctor and teacher and founder of the Methodist church that still resides in New Wilmington today. The Poppino family were also Abolitionists and The Tavern was once a part of the Underground Railroad. Slaves were hidden in the home and taken to freedom via a tunnel that runs underneath the building.
The restaurant was opened in 1931 by Cora Durrast. Cora was a former Westminster College student who saw the need to provide a place for parents to dine when they came to visit their college students. The restaurant became a huge success and was labled a FIVE STAR restaurant by many travel and dining magazines.
Beautifully restored, The Tavern is once again a must see destination.
Susan and Joseph Hougelman continue the tradition of Cora's famous homemade Sticky Buns, Hamloaf, Chicken and dumplings and many other delicious country dishes. Known for their amazing entrees and desserts, reasonable prices and outstanding service, The Tavern on the Square is a favorite restaurant by many diners far and wide.
Beautiful Murals painted on the walls, hand stenciled floors, seven dining rooms, a gift shoppe and coming soon The Little Bakery on the Square which will feature homemade pies, cakes, pasteries, fudge and many other delightful baked goods!
If you're looking to host a special function, The Tavern on the Square boasts five private dining rooms that can accomodate up to fifty guests. Give Susan a call at 724-946-2020 for more information.

Come and see us. We not only will fill your bellies with good food, we will fill your hearts up with warmth, comfort and love! Sincerely,

Susan and Joe Hougelman

The Tavern on the Square is exactly what is posted. It is a beautiful building with wonderful food, hostess, waiters, and owners. Such a friendly place that shows the love of the Lord through all they do!! The food and prices are great! And what a deal on the Monday "buy one get one free". The choices are all so good it is hard to decide which one to have! Go and enjoy a great time.
