"The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective."

G.K. Chesterton
Accepting New Year's reservations! We offer a free glass of champagne or sparkling juice for each guest on New Years.  Come celebrate with us!

Welcome Friends!

Hello and welcome to The Tavern on the Square. We are so glad you came here to check us out. The Tavern on the Square is housed in a beautiful home that was built in 1849 by Seth and Mary Poppino. It was once part of the Underground Railroad. Seth and Mary were abolutionists and they hid slaves in their home. It is true that there is a tunnel underneath The Tavern that was used to transport slaves to freedom!
In 1933, Ernst and Cora Durrast opened The Tavern on the Square Restaurant. It became a famous five star restaurant and was known all over the country as a wonderul place to dine! There were no menus in the Old Tavern and food was served family style. The Tavern was a restaurant for special occasions. You weren't even allowed in unless you were dressed up!
Times have changed, we no longer serve our food family style, there are menus and you don't have to dress up anymore! BUT..we still have amazing home cooked meals and the atmosphere of The Tavern is so beautiful. There are seven dining rooms here, all with a unique theme. Hand painted murals, amish made oak tables, an Americana room, a Victorian Tea Room, a beautiful gift shoppe filled with primitive and country gifts... all to make your heart fill with love and your belly filled with good food! Come and visit us. You will be happy you did. Your friend, Susan
